It’s no secret that I love to shop at Aldi. I think the quality and value are unmatched when it comes to trying to feed my hungry and active family of five. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some of my tried-and-true staples that I recommend giving a try! Today, we’re talking produce.
Long live the 800-g Challenge! When I walk into Aldi, I skip right over the special buys at the entrance and head straight for the produce section. I’m sure you have heard the advice “shop the perimeter” of the grocery store. This is where you will find the least processed foods and you can fill up your cart with all those grams. It’s also where the value begins—I recommend taking your time in this section and checking out the weekly deals on fresh fruits and veggies. Here are some of my favorites.
Salad greens/spinach/leafy greens: So many different kinds to choose from. Try something new and find something you love! Greens can be sautéed in minutes and added to a lunch bowl or stirred into a soup to add belly-filling nutrients.
Carrots: I prefer to buy the big bags of whole carrots and cut them into sticks, but Aldi also carries cut baby carrots.
Onions/garlic/peppers/celery: These add so much flavor to soups and other hearty dishes!
Sweet potatoes: Mash ‘em, roast ‘em, bake ‘em.
Squash: So many varieties. Some are similar to sweet potatoes but different enough to break the boredom. Try spaghetti squash in this recipe.
Spiral-cut veggies: Snoop around on Pinterest for a few minutes and you will find dozens of recipes that call for spiralized veggies. Treat them like noodles in pasta dishes or Buddha bowls.
Bananas: Eat them out of hand, of course. If my bananas are getting too ripe, I will peel them, cut them into two-inch pieces, and freeze them to sweeten and thicken smoothies. I will also make banana bread (a kiddo favorite). Here is my favorite classic recipe! (I reduce the sugar a bit.)
Bagged apples: Great as a quick snack for kids and busy mama. Apples + PB = J. Also makes a great apple crumble!
Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are our favorites. The kiddos love them fresh, and I love to add them to my oatmeal or yogurt.
Lemons: Add to your water. Whip up a quick dressing. Add to chicken or fish. Brighten up your dish!
Fresh salsa: Tacos are a staple in our house—and you can’t have tacos without really good, fresh, spicy salsa.
Pre-sliced fruit: Looking to get some grams on your lunch break? Head to the produce section and pick up some peeled and sliced watermelon, mango, or pineapple.
